Sonoran Desert Biological Assessment
GEE undertook a series of biological assessments of large expanses of desert habitat on several properties planned for residential development in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona. Data collection included desert wash corridor vegetation and wildlife surveys. Specific surveys were conducted to identify the protected burrowing owl (Speotyto cunicularia) and its potential habitat. Soil maps, hydrological features and vegetation maps were analyzed to determine if the evaluated sites provided habitat for endangered or threatened species.
As burrowing owls are an Arizona wildlife species of special concern, GEE completed a follow-up survey and program to identify and relocate owls and burrows found on-site. GEE ultimately was responsible for the relocation of dozens of owls to protected habitats.
