Landfill Restoration Avian Management

GEE worked as environmental technicians on the Pennsylvania and Fountain Avenue Landfill Restoration Projects. The freshly planted grasses of the landfills provided attractive nesting grounds for local and migratory bird species. This raised concerns at the nearby JFK International Airport, as planes flying at very low altitudes over the landfills could potentially collide with the birds, causing damage to planes and risking passenger safety such as the emergency landing of the US Airways Flight in the Hudson River that occurred in January 2009.

GEE developed and carried out bird management strategies on-site throughout the year, providing daily dawn-to-dusk surveys of bird and wildlife activity and conducted hazing activities to discourage bird use of the site.
